Be prepared enough that you know that you can reliably complete the game in some kind of reasonable time, then just go for it. On a similar note I don't recommend starting out by hardcore practicing very hard tricks before you feel like you can do a run, unless the practice itself is fun to you. Where you're at on a leaderboard is secondary to that. As long as you're not so starved of consecutive free time that you physically can't complete your runs (and you could perhaps choose a game that's not a 10 hour JRPG) you will have a lot of fun improving your own times. That's the thing that's so cool about speedrunning: your only real opponent is you (and the game if you will).
